Uber, MADD pair up for drunk driving prevention over July 4th

As is tradition every Fourth of July, the news turns its focus on one of the more dangerous days to be out on the road of the year. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), in 2012 roughly half of all fatal accidents on July 4th involved a drunk driver. So they are trying to do something about it this year by partnering with the mobile ride service Uber to reduce the number of drunk drivers out on the road.

The promotion will certainly benefit both parties, and hopefully it makes the roads safer. No one wants drunk driving accidents to occur, especially during a joyous occasion such as a national holiday.

The unfortunate truth here is that drunk driving accidents are bound to happen this weekend, and really every weekend, until there is a dramatic change to automobiles (self-driving cars, anyone?). No one condones drunk driving -- but when a person does commit this act, they have some basic criminal rights that must be upheld by the police and the public.

The drunk driver has a right to a fair and unbiased trial, and he or she has the right to an attorney to make the best possible case for him or her. Just because they stand accused of an unfortunate act does not immediately make them guilty. Drunk driving carries very serious penalties for the accused, and they stand to lose a lot if they are found guilty. They had to defend themselves as best they can, and their best choice is to consult an experienced criminal defense attorney.
