21 indicted in drug ring

New York residents who hear reports about criminal charges being levied against defendants may not always understand the nuances involved in the terminology used. For example, there can be a big difference between a third degree crime and a second degree crime. Specific terms used relate to different offenses and therefore to potentially different sets of consequences as well.

Reports indicate that multiple entities including the Department of Homeland Security were involved in an investigation of a group of people believed to be trafficking drugs. The investigation is said to have lasted a full year. Wire taps were apparently part of this effort. In the end, a total of 21 people have been indicted for their alleged roles in the drug trafficking. Two of those people have been charged as major traffickers.

The identification as a major trafficker may put the two men at risk of greater consequences than their counterparts. They may be sentenced to spend the rest of their lives in prison if they are found guilty of being major traffickers. No details were given as to what charges were entered against the remaining 19 people. It is also not known where the raid occurred but drugs, weapons and cash are said to have been recovered in the raid.

When faced with a serious criminal charge, people in New York might find it helpful to reach out to a lawyer to learn how they may defend themselves and their rights.
