Driving through construction zones is dangerous for both workers and drivers. It requires that close attention be paid at all times, to avoid causing harm to others. In areas of road construction, drunk drivers are of a particular menace, as their speed and inability to react quickly, make them a substantial threat to everyone on the road.

According to a previous study done by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), of the nearly 40,000 work zone accidents caused by passing vehicles, approximately 13 percent of those are attributed to alcohol and driving while intoxicated. While speed remains the number one safety concern for road workers, speed along with the delayed reaction time induced by alcohol, creates some seriously dangerous working conditions.

With the ever-increasing commuter distance to work, time spent in the car and on the road has grown exponentially over the last two decades. This increase in travel times leads to wear and tear of major roadways, and eventually infrastructure replacement and maintenance. Much of the major overhaul work done on America’s roadways is completed at night, which poses its own set of difficulties and risks aside from sharing the road with bar time patrons.

The millions of men and women that work these late nights and long hours do so to improve the roads that we travel on each and every day. As frustrated as we get with orange cones and flashing work zone signs, it is a necessary evil. When heading home after a long night out, it is in everyone’s best interest to remember where you have to be the next morning. Keep in mind, it is those road workers you’re zooming past that make that commute happen.
